This was the HARDSCRABBLE of Chicago around 1818:  a ruff n' tumbl'n wild onion and cabbage patch of immigrants.  It was named "Bridgeport" in 1836, a year before the City of Chicago's incorporation, and was annexed to Chicago in 1863, just a few miles west of the infamous Civil War Camp Douglas.
